Rhuthun 19.v.11 Dolgellau

                          [Div 1North ] 14.10.2017

Games between these two sides have been pretty close in the recent past, and today’s match was no exception.   It was keenly and hard fought from first minute to last, where the hosts continued their improved form, whilst Dolgellau are also improving, but finding it hard to pick up points on their travels.

With a blustery cross-wind making matters difficult for both sides, it was Rhuthun who edged ahead with a penalty to stand-off Nathan Jones after seven minutes. With two well drilled and organised defences on top, clear chances were rare, and twenty five minutes had passed when Dolgellau equalised through a Gerwyn Thomas penalty.

Nathan Jones put Rhuthun ahead three minutes later, but Dolgellau levelled matters immediately, as centre Dylan Evans’ surging run brought another penalty for Gerwyn Thomas to make the score 6-6 at the interval.

With the wind in their favour Rhuthun put Dolgellau under pressure from the re-start. Jones put over his third penalty after four minutes, and from a five meter line-out, prop Dan Owen barged over in the right corner to make it 14-6 with ten minutes gone.

Dolgellau tried in vain to run the ball out of defence, and Rhuthun capitalised on a loose pass in mid-field that saw replacement left wing, Kyle Davies sprint outside and along the left touchline for the try and make it 19-6. To their credit, Dolgellau responded strongly and on the half hour their efforts were finally rewarded. With their forwards edging forward, second row Carwyn Hughes carved out a niche that was exploited by centre Dylan Evans who was hauled down on the line, but hooker Geraint Evans was there to burst through to touchdown, and give Dolgellau hope at 19-11.

However any hope of Dolgellau pressing for a losing bonus were denied as Rhuthun finished strongly and the match ended without any further score.
