First, we must congratulate the magnificent effort of the Bro Ffestiniog ground staff for getting the pitch ready for this encounter. An oasis of green amid the carnage of recent floods and storms.
When referee, Ed Brown, got this eagerly awaited match going both sides had to cope with a bitingly cold cross wind, that benefited no one in particular, whilst making it difficult for the kickers of both sides. However that aside, this derby match did not disappoint.

Bro were first out of the blocks, and playing down the slope, had Dolgellau on the rack for most part of the first quarter. Bro Skipper Tom James, No8 Dewi James and outstanding second row Dylan Daniels all came desperately close, only to be denied by some magnificent defending from the visitors’ defence.

Dolgellau centre Owain Thomas’ run into Bro territory after twenty five minutes was the fist time the visitors managed to break over half way, and from this point onward, it was the visitors that grew into the match and went on to dominate.

With five minutes of the half remaining, Dolgellau centre Gareth Hughes burst through on the crash ball, but suffered a serious looking knee injury.  Ed Brown ordered both sides into the changing room for some respite from the wind, whilst Hughes was treated, but the half ended 0-0.

Dolgellau playing down the slope, were now beginning to wear down their rivals.   Second row Marius Jones crossed for a certain score, after eighteen minutes, but  the referee was unsighted and the try was not awarded. However only a couple of minutes later, a scrum 5 metres out saw Dolgellau’s forwards grind onwards, no.8 Iwan Pugh made it to the try line, and Marius Jones  was on hand to barge over for a deserved score. 0-5 and looking like only one winner from here on.

Only four minutes later, it was 0-10. From a line out five metres out, the visitors forwards again making hard yardage, and skipper Rhys Roberts crossing for the score. Stand-off Gwion Jones’s conversion going just wide.

Wing James Owen and replacement centre, Gerallt Hughes came close, but with time running out. Dolgellau replacement Dewi Thomas was tackled on the line but outstanding prop, Eon Williams gathered the ball and surged over to cap a magnificent performance by him and his team mates.

Dolgellau up to 9th, but have some tough encounters on the horizon, but on this evidence, their survival chances are improving with every match,

Referee : Ed Brown
