Dolgellau 15.v.22 Rhuthun [DIV 1 NORTH] 25.01.2020 Both sides can take positives from this close encounter, with Rhuthun’s speedy threequarters earning them a try bonus point to maintain their slim chance at making the top spot, whilst Dolgellau can take a lot of comfort from a well earned losing bonus.
In perfect conditions, Dolgellau centre Owain Thomas, gathered a loose Rhuthun kick-off, and made some yards before being hauled down on the 22, that saw him pull a hamstring, to be replaced by Eben Jones. Rhuthun wing, Josh Wilson, showed a glimpse of what was to come after ten minutes, but he was forced to knock on by the outstanding defence of Dolgellau wing Rhys Lewis. However Wilson made amends ten minutes minutes later, finishing off a slick handling move to score wide on the right and make it 0-5.
On the half hour mark, the visitors were probing again, and this time no.8 Chris Davies, skirted around a ruck to score a try. This time, full-back Dyfan Humphreys converted to make it 0-12. However, Dolgellau responded well. Young flanker, Cai Lewis-Smith won the ball at front of a line out five metres out. Dolgellau’s forwards drove forwards and skipper, Rhys Roberts touched down for a great forwards try. 5-12 and all to play for at the interval.
Two minutes into the 2nd half, Dolgellau no.8, and man of the Match, Marius Jones was instigator, and brother Tim, at flanker, broke free to release wing Geraint Owen in for the try at right corner to bring the home side right back into contention at 10-12.
However, the visitors, were looking dangerous as the match wore on, and once more their threequarters spotted space down Dolgellau’s left flank, for replacement centre, Jamie Jones to score wide out. With seven minutes remaining they were at it again, this time speed merchant, Josh Wilson, scoring his second try of the match to take the score to 10-22.
However Dolgellau finished strongly, centre, Gareth Hughes and wing Dafydd Ellis came close, and with two minutes remaining, their reward came. A perfect catch and drive for outstanding prop, Eon Williams to crash over to end the scoring at 15-22.
