Dolgellau 14.v.0 Caernarfon

                            [DIV 1 NORTH] 11.01.2020

Two first half tries from Dolgellau forwards, Celt Lewis and Eon Williams eased them to an unassailable 14-0 halftime lead, with the benefit of a strong wind and the lashing rain. Their forwards then went on to dominate during the scoreless second half to record four precious league points.

In atrocious conditions, Dolgellau elected to use the elements in their favour, and went ahead after twelve minutes.  No.08 Iwan Pugh securing clean possession from a 5m lineout and the forward drive saw hooker, Celt Lewis to score out on the left. Centre Gwion Jones converted from a difficult angle, as well as pretty poor kicking conditions, to make it 7-0.

There was a cohesiveness about the home forwards for this match, and after twenty- eight minutes, a carbon copy try, from a lineout, this time with prop, Eon Williams crashing over.  Again, a magnificent conversion from Gwion Jones, went over via the left side post, to put Dolgellau 14-0 ahead.

Caernarfon tried in vain to counter on several neat excursions into Dolgellau territory, without any real threat, but Dolgellau full-back, James Owen, thwarted a certain Caernarfon score with five first half minutes remaining.

Dolgellau’s set piece and overall domination at forward saw them defend their slender 14 point lead magnificently during the second half. However they had to endure ten minutes without flanker, Peter Blake, as he was sin binned for persistent high tackling.  Dolgellau wing Rob Pugh thwarted Caernarfon’s only real chance during the second half, and as the home eight grew in confidence, as the match wore on, they dominated territory against the elements.  Centre Gareth Hughes knocked on, five metres out, and the match ended with the home side very much on top, and so secure a very welcome and deserved home win.

Man Of The Match : Dolgellau’s stand in skipper, Jac Roberts, for taking over from his usual no.10 early in the match to replace the injured no.9 Elis Smith in testing conditions, and leading the side to victory !

Referee : Craig Roberts
