Newtown v Dolgellau 5/1/19

North Wales Youth Premiership
Newtown Youth 22  -  Dolgellau Youth 24
———————————————————

Newtown was the destination for Dolgellau youth’s first game of 2019. They traveled with a bare 15 due to a couple of late withdrawals which forced a few players to play in some unfamiliar roles and due to recent circumstances this was to be very much a backs against the wall performance.

On a dry day but on a sticky pitch from the recent rain the visitors opened the scoring, fly half Gwion Jones kicking the penalty after an offside offence. Newtown were quick to reply though scoring out wide after a period in possession. Dolgellau fought back and put the home side under pressure only to lose possession and having to chase back from a kick out of hand by the impressive Newtown full back. The visitors successfully held up a maul only for the ref to only reward the home side with a scrum 5, from which they scored again out wide.

Newtown attacked straight from the restart and as they started to spread the ball wide outside centre Sei Jones pounced on an interception and ran it in from his own half for a very popular try. Jones converted.

Dolgellau continued to put pressure on the Newtown line and forced them into conceding multiple penalties which eventually led to the Newtown lock receiving a yellow card. The visitors opted for a five meter scrum allowing No8 and captain Tim Jones to barge his way over. Jones successful again with the conversion taking the half time score to 10 - 17.

Newtown were first to score in the second half levelling the scores early on. Defences ruled for the next quarter. Dolgellau looked strong throughout solid in defence and finding gaps in attack, centre Owain Thomas leading the way in both facets of play.

Dolgellau then scored probably the try of the game, off a set scrum on the 10mtr line scrum half Daniel Thomas fed out half Jones who popped a lovely pass to the charging winger Craig Debell who beat and ran through a couple of defenders to touchdown. Jones converted slowing Dolgellau to regain the lead.

With minutes remaining Dolgellau stood firm regaining possession only for flanker Ifan Jones who had been outstanding throughout to be wrongly penalised for holding on. This allowed Newtown to score out wide after a driving line out from the 5mtr line in the last minute but the missed conversion gave Dolgellau a deserved first win of the new year.

This was a highly entertaining match and a great performance by Dolgellau and every player gave their all in defence and attack. Flanker Ifan Jones was impressive and along with lock Ben Davies were a real physical presence throughout. Jones playing out of position at outhalf guided the team superbly and Sei Jones first start at outside centre was particularly impressive. Gwion Jones at prop carried well and kept going until the very end. Man of the match though was centre Owain Thomas. His ability to stop most of Newtown’s back line moves dead in their tracks with some intelligent and forceful defending along with his pace powerfull running ball in hand was certainly one the main contributions to this well deserved win.
