Dolgellau 14.V. 12 Wrexham

Division 2 North  Thursday 21th February 2019

Dolgellau and Wrexham served up another cracking contest for the 2nd time in five days. This time Dolgellau squeezed home curtesy of a penalty from centre Henri Roberts with fifteen minutes of normal time remining to clinch it.

Both sides needed to win this game, and so a cup match atmosphere was guaranteed from the first whistle to last.  It was Dolgellau who struck first. Stand-off Jac Roberts hoisting up a neat chip that was gathered by brother, Henri Roberts and he was hauled down five metres out. Wrexham killed the ball at the ruck, and Roberts dusted himself down to slot over the penalty and make it 3-0 after eight minutes.

However the match was turned on its head after a quarter of an hour, with the visitors scoring two glorious tries in the space of two minutes. The first was a great solo effort from scrum half, Olly Dodd, breaking from a scrum on half way to speed along through some desperate home defending to score out on the right. Two minutes later the ever dangerous Wrexham threequarters shifted the ball to the left wing, where full back, Nick Dodd chipped ahead perfectly, and he duly won the frantic race for the touchdown. This time stand-off, Sam  Rogers converted and Wrexham led 3-12.

It looked ominous for Dolgellau at this point, but they responded magnificently and six minutes later they were right back in contention. As Wrexham gave way a series of penalties, and Dolgellau elected to go to the corner, and from a line-out 5m out, prop Huw Jones surged over for the try to make it 8-12.

Dolgellau handled the mounting tension very well and with five minutes remaining, Henri Roberts  put over his 2nd penalty from 30 metres out to bring Dolgellau within a point at 11-12 at the interval.

The pendulum swung from end to end during a highly charged second half, but Dolgellau were relying on Wrexham indiscipline to have a chance at goal, and Henry Roberts came desperately close with two difficult penalties, but after twenty five 2nd half minutes, the winner came. A mammoth effort from 45 metres to put Dolgellau 14-12 ahead.

With seven minutes to go Wrexham’s Sam Rogers had a glorious opportunity to win it for the visitors with a penalty only 20 metres out, but he scuffed his pot at goal, shaving the left hand post. And so Dolgellau held on in a frantic last five minutes, to claim a memorable victory, and put themselves right back in contention in the hunt for automatic promotion.

It will be a very interesting run in !
