Dolgellau 28.v. 12 Wrexham

[NW Intermediate Cup Semi Final] 12.04.2017

Dolgellau are through to the Intermediate Cup final, where they will meet their Division 2 promotion rivals, Denbigh, at Eirias Park on the 13th May, following this typically tough cup encounter, against a very committed Wrexham side.

In an error strewn, frantic opening neither side could gain the upper hand, and both opening tries came from loose clearance kicks.  Dolgellau were first to capitalise as full-back, Henri Roberts gathered a high ball and his momentum together with assistance from young second row, Colin Markham saw scrum half, Jac Roberts break through to score. Brother Henri Roberts slotted over the conversion to put Dolgellau 7-0 ahead after five minutes play.

Ten minutes later it was the visitors who took advantage of a loose Dolgellau clearance, as wing Edward Evans sped along the left touchline to set up full back Nick Dodd for the  try. Centre Armani Roberts converted to make it all square. Henri Roberts put Dolgellau 10-7 ahead after twenty minutes with a penalty and on the half hour mark Dolgellau scored a cracking try as skipper, Gerwyn Thomas found centre Gareth Hughes on the crash ball, and his pace almost took him over, but Thomas was there in good support to score the try. This put Dolgellau 15-7 ahead, before Wrexham blew a glorious try scoring opportunity with a three man overlap. With two minutes of the half remaining, Gerwyn Thomas and no.8 Danny Evans took Dolgellau deep into Wrexham red zone, and prop Dan Brazier was there in good support to go over from their third try. Henry Roberts converted and Dolgellau led 22-7 at half time.

Henry Roberts made the score 25-7 seven minutes into the second period, and added his third penalty after twenty minutes, to make it 28-7 as Wrexham’s discipline at the breakdown led to referee Aaron Cross yellow carding winger Eddy Evans.  Wrexham never gave in and scored a deserved score with six minutes to go, when wing Matt Whitely squeezed over in the right corner to make the final score 28-12.
