Dolgellau u16 took on Grifoni in the first game on their italian tour this Tuesday night. Dolgellau were first on the score sheet within 10 minutes gone. Grifoni began with intent attacking Dolgellau from the off. But after some solid defence from the visitors in their own half, a turnover was won and Dolgellau countered, and after several phases centre Owain Thomas kicked through the cover defence and was to collect the kick and score out wide. Centre Gwion Jones duly converted. Ordeza were soon to fight back after some sustained pressure their burly winger crossed for a try. Despite a significant weight advantage in favour of the home team, Dolgellau battled on bravely. But the home team were soon to score again. Their flanker spotting a gap in Dolgellau's back-pedalling defence and touching down under the posts. With the score at 12-7 at half time. The visitors started the second period with attacking intent. Centres Gwion Jones and Owain Thomas continually attacked the home team's line, combined with the back row of Ben Davies, Ifan and Cai Smith who carried and foraged relentlessly. Eventually the pressure told, and the half backs Owain Kelly and Tom Markham guided the team superbly. After some good phase play and some sublime handling allowed Seimon Jones to touch down for a well taken try out wide. Gwion Jones then kicked the conversion. With the visitors now leading Ordeza piled on the pressure in Dolgellau's 22, but an outstanding defensive effort led by prop JayPorter held them out allowing Dolgellau to take a well earned victory. This was an outstanding match and both sides should be praised for their commitment and attitude. Owain Thomas took the man of the match for a superb all round display. Ordeza were the perfect hosts and the touring party were made to feel totally welcome. A fantastic experience for everyone.
